WELCOME TO BANNER TALES
Uncovering and celebrating the social and mining heritage of the villages of West Gateshead
Remembering our heritage
EVERY BANNER TELLS A STORY
Beautifully crafted and carried with pride the pit banners were a visual representation of the hopes and aspirations of the mining communities.

Sadly, since the decline of the mining industry, many of these banners have been lost or neglected.
Banner Tales was founded to undo this neglect and bring back the banners and the community spirit they once represented.

2021 EVENTS

August 2021:
Banner Tales are pleased to announce that we will be hosting the 5th Greenside Community Picnic on Sunday August 29th at Greenside Cricket Club.

As the Durham Miners' Gala - The Big Meeting - has been cancelled this year, this will be one of the many "Little Big Meetings" that are being organised around the area as an alternative.

Gates will be open from 12.30 pm and the picnic will be officially opened by local MP Liz Twist.

Entertainment will be provided by Craghead Brass Band, Kiddar's Luck folk trio and a number of local pop, rock and soul acts.

Craft stalls and childrens' activities will also be avilable.
There will also be a "decorated pit tub" event. See details on the Pit Tub Competition page..
